What is Ovulation?

Ovulation refers to the release of an egg from an ovary. It usually happens around 12 to 16 days after the beginning of your last period. It is possible to fertilize the egg anywhere from 12 to 24 hours after it’s released.

Since sperm can live inside a woman’s body for 3 to 5 days after sex, the possibility of pregnancy is highest during those days around ovulation. Although a woman can get pregnant at any time during her monthly cycle, some doctors suggest you are most fertile from day 8 through day 19.

What If My Periods Are Irregular?

The average period is between 28 and 32 days, which is considered regular. However, some women have shorter cycles, and some have longer.

The first day of a woman’s period is the first day of her menstrual cycle. Most periods last 3 to 7 days. Keeping a regular calendar of the length of your period can help to determine your most fertile time.

The chances of pregnancy are lowest during a person’s period and on the days on either side of the period. However, a woman’s menstrual cycle can change from month to month, so it is difficult to accurately predict, especially if her periods are irregular.

Fertility naturally begins to decline in females in their 30s. By age 40, a person’s chance of conceiving drops to 10% per cycle.
