If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, you may be looking for fast answers, especially if you’re considering the abortion pill (also called a medical abortion). Many women assume it’s a simple option because it often happens at home, but it can come with intense physical side effects and real risks.
Before you make any decision, you deserve reliable information and a place to talk through what you’re facing. At Pee Dee PRC, we offer no-cost, confidential educational classes, options consultations, and post-abortive care. Our team is here to help you feel supported, loved, equipped, and empowered as you consider your next step.

What Is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill involves two drugs taken within a short timeframe:
- Mifepristone, which blocks progesterone, the hormone needed for pregnancy to continue
- Misoprostol, taken 24 to 48 hours later, which causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy and related tissue through bleeding and cramping
The FDA approves the abortion pill only through 10 weeks of pregnancy and advises against purchasing them online.
Common Side Effects
Bleeding and cramping will occur after taking the abortion pill. Many women describe the experience as much heavier and more painful than a typical period.
Other side effects may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Fever or chills
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
Some women also pass blood clots during the process, which can be alarming, especially if you weren’t prepared for what that might look like.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While some side effects are expected, certain warning signs should not be ignored. Seek urgent medical care if you experience:
- Heavy bleeding (soaking two or more pads per hour for two consecutive hours)
- No bleeding 24 hours after taking misoprostol
- Severe abdominal or pelvic pain that doesn’t improve
- Fever lasting more than 24 hours
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- No periods after 2 months
- Dizziness, fainting, or weakness
- Ongoing pregnancy
These symptoms may point to complications such as infection, incomplete abortion, hemorrhage, ectopic pregnancy, and uterine rupture.
Emotional Side Effects Are Real, Too
Physical symptoms are only part of the picture. Many women also experience emotional effects afterward, including sadness, numbness, anxiety, regret, or mood changes.
Research suggests emotional responses can shift over time, and some women are not aware they may need support until much later, when unexpected feelings begin to surface.
No matter what you’re feeling, you don’t have to carry it alone.
