Is There a Mental Health Connection with Abortion?

Many women report immediately feeling relief following their abortion. But for some women, significant mental health issues begin as a direct result of their abortion experience. One study found the following:

  • Women with a history of abortion have consistently elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.
  • The abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.
  • There are risk factors, such as pre-existing mental illness, that identify women at the most significant risk of mental health problems after an abortion.

A similar study determined that women who had an abortion experienced an 81% higher risk of mental health problems of various forms when compared with women who had not had an abortion. Your feelings are real.
