You may be able to detect an embryo by ultrasound as early as six weeks of gestational age, though most initial ultrasounds are performed around eight weeks.

At Pee Dee PRC, you can receive free pregnancy testing along with referrals for a free ultrasound.

What Should I Expect During a Prenatal Ultrasound?

When you go in for an ultrasound, the type of scan depends on how far along you are. Early in pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound is usually recommended because it gives the clearest view in the first trimester.

For the transvaginal scan, you’ll undress from the waist down and place your feet in stirrups (similar to a pap test). The technician will then use a small, lubricated wand to capture images by inserting the wand inside the vagina.

As the pregnancy progresses, an abdominal ultrasound is more common. This approach is non-invasive, with the technician moving a handheld device across your abdomen to view the pregnancy.

When is an Ultrasound Necessary?

An ultrasound is the next step if you’ve received a positive pregnancy test. This scan confirms the location of the pregnancy. If located outside the uterus, it’s an ectopic pregnancy, which requires immediate medical attention.

It can also show whether the pregnancy is progressing or if a miscarriage has occurred, which is more common than many people realize, with as many as 1 in 4 pregnancies resulting in a miscarriage.

An ultrasound also measures gestational age, giving you the information you need to understand your options moving forward.
