Every woman’s abortion experience is unique. Many women say they feel relief immediately following their abortions. But, as the days, months, and even years go by, some women struggle mentally with their abortion decision.

There are a few clues to reveal how you might be affected. Take a closer look.

Why Are Some Women Affected Mentally?

One study reviewed a variety of articles written about the effect of abortion on a woman’s mental health. It concluded the following:

  • Abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.
  • The abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.
  • There are risk factors, such as pre-existing mental illness, that identify women at the most significant risk of mental health problems after an abortion.

What Are Some of Their Mental Health Issues?

For some women, there was a sense of loss or grief. Other women reported trauma from their experiences. Everything from anxiety and depression to substance abuse and thoughts of suicide are possible.

Factors that might change why some women struggle more than others could include:

  • Being forced or manipulated into having an abortion
  • Maternal instincts
  • How far along they were (their gestational age)
  • Moral or religious beliefs
  • The ability to discuss or not discuss abortion openly
