Timing Changes Everything

A pregnancy test works by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Because hCG builds gradually in the early days of pregnancy, taking a test too early can lead to a negative result even when a pregnancy is present. For the most accurate result, waiting until at least the first day of a missed period gives hCG levels the best chance of being detectable.

Testing first thing in the morning, when urine is most concentrated, can also improve accuracy. If your cycle is irregular or unpredictable, waiting at least three weeks after possible conception is a more reliable approach.

What a Result Can and Cannot Tell You

A positive result tells you that hCG is present. What it cannot tell you is how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is developing, or whether the pregnancy is located safely in the uterus. These are details that only an ultrasound can provide, and they matter when it comes to understanding your situation and protecting your wellbeing.

When a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the uterus, typically in a fallopian tube, it is called an ectopic pregnancy. A home test cannot tell you whether this is the case. Left undetected, an ectopic pregnancy can become a serious medical emergency. Getting an ultrasound early is the only way to know for certain that the pregnancy is located in the uterus.

Clarity Is the First Step Forward

Finding out early gives you time to process, ask questions, and explore every option available to you without feeling rushed or backed into a corner. The earlier you know, the more equipped you are to move forward with clarity.

At Pee Dee PRC, our volunteers are here to walk alongside you with honest, compassionate education in a space where you are never judged and never pressured. We can connect you with ultrasound referral services and local resources to help you feel fully informed.
